The "Breakthrough of the Year" is an annual award made by a journal called "Science" for the most significant global development in scientific research. The award is widely recognized as one of the highest distinctions in science. The 2010 award went to the quantum machine.

What is a quantum machine? Until now, all machines have moved according to the not-surprising laws of classical mechanics, which govern the motion of everyday objects. In contrast, a tiny machine unveiled this year jiggles in ways explicable only by the weird rules of quantum mechanics, which ordinarily govern molecules, atoms, and subatomic particles. The quantum machine opens the way to myriad experimental devices and perhaps tests our sense of reality.

The Breakthrough for GraySwan Investments has been the development of our leading edge and world class risk and performance reporting system.

Apart from attracting three institutional clients in GraySwan Investments, Reportfolio (our boutique reporting business) has attracted their first client and now provide monthly risk and performance reporting services for a major retirement fund investor. To further enhance our reporting to clients, they will soon be able to download all their reports directly from our website's backend.

We are celebrating our six-month anniversary in February and very excited about growing our business in 2011.

The Charitable Trust has already made its mark and is involved in various activities. Read about these in our Charitable Trust newsletters. We are currently involved in a building project at four crèches in Kayamandi informal settlement. Wendy houses serve as crèches and they are erected on bricks above the ground which is very unsafe. We are building permanent steps so that the children can easily get to and from their classes every day.
